You cried bitterly in the rain. It was pouring and you had no place to go.

You were a young girl whose mother and father had been taken away by the soldiers.

As you neared the woods you had so often played in, you noticed a sweet smell you had never smelt before.

It was fresh and tinged with a bit of sweetness and it was so tempting that you unconsciously followed it, unaware of the growing mud stain on your boots and the howling wind.

You arrived at a fence with a little broken down gate, creaking on its hinges. Inside was the tree that caused the smell – a cherry blossom tree.

Strange, you had never found this place before. But you were so groggy with the cold and the rain that you weren't quite aware of anything anymore, and you stepped into the fenced area.

You stumbled deeper into the territory, sighting a single glowing window.

Maybe… you could find shelter in there, just for one night…

   

(Kiku's POV)

Honda Kiku had noticed the size of the storm and started worrying about his broken gate. He decided to take a look.

Hastily slipping on an extra kimono, he stepped out of the sliding door, only to find a little girl, about four years old, fallen at his doorstep, her (h/c) hair framed her young face.

Forgetting about the gate completely, Kiku used his extra kimono to wrap up the soaked bundle and picked her up into his house.

   

(Your POV)

When you woke up, the storm was still raging outside. But your clothes were warm, dry and crisp and you were safely under the roof of a house. You could hear the fire's merry crackle.

You sat up and realized that a small Japanese man was kneeling by the fire. He looked at you when he heard the blankets rustle, and he greeted you formally.

"Konnichiwa, I am Honda Kiku. You can call me Kiku."

You stared into the friendly but curious brown eyes and replied shyly, "I'm ________"

He continued tending to the flames and you noticed that he was boiling a teapot of water over it. After a few moments he took the teapot off and poured some into two small cups.

You realized that it was green tea, and you took in the aroma.

"Can I have some?" you asked shyly.

Kiku looked up in surprise. "But it is very bitter. Are you sure?"

You nodded and he handed you a petite teacup. You drank it all and surprisingly liked the bitter taste.

"How is that a young girl is alone in the rain?" He asked as he refilled your cup.

"Mommy and Daddy were taken by soldiers." Your adorable (e/c) eyes brimmed with tears.

He frowned, his eyes a bit sad. "The soldiers are nothing but trouble, no?"

"H-hai," you answered.

His eyes lit up. "I've never met someone in these parts who speak Japanese."

"My mother was Japanese," you told him shyly.

He smiled back pleasantly. "Now let's fix up a tatami in my room for you, shall we?"

   

You trotted into his room behind his legs. You liked the smell of his house, Japanese cherry blossom. Especially that the design was so like your own, before the house was burnt down by the soldiers.

"Would you like to – to live with me? I have lived alone for a long time," Kiku said.

You looked up at him, your (e/c) eyes melting his heart again. "Really, Kiku-san?"

He smiled down at you. "You can call me Kiku. But I'm sure it's okay."

"Then if I'm living with you, can I call you Oto-san?" You asked sweetly.

He started for a moment, then evidently pleased, he replied, "Yes, you can call me Oto-san."
